Wedding folklore

Ever wondered where and when wedding folklore that we know today came about?

You will know about the white bonnet ribbon on a wedding car but why?

And ever wondered why the seemingly odd rhyme that a bride was thought to have something old and something new on her wedding day!

Let’s start with the “traditional white bonnet ribbon”:

Ribbons were often attached to the bride’s dress as a symbol of her purity and innocence in medieval Europe and even similarly through the 19th century. With the arrival of the modern automobile in the early 20th century the white bonnet ribbon was to adorn the wedding car & signified the couple’s new life journey bringing them good luck and ward off negativity. Others have taken it to the next level by adapting a colour for their bonnet ribbon to match the wedding theme.

Something old something new, something borrowed and something blue and the one that most don’t know a sixpence in her shoe.
